In the Spotlight
While hand crafting new heirlooms for clients across Australia and internationally, Anton Gerner still finds time to come up with even more creative concepts and quirky ideas that need an outlet. He’s shown his pieces in over 50 exhibitions since 1988 and has racked up plenty of prizes and prestige along the way.
In 2020, two of Anton’s pieces were acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria through the Department of Contemporary Design and Architecture. Huon pine sculptural drawers 2011-19 and A cabinet with no front or back 2016-18 now form part of the permanent collection, alongside some of Anton’s furniture-making idols.
One-off Anton Gerner pieces from his exhibitions are held in private collections throughout Australia and overseas.
In 2019 Anton held his first solo exhibition, The Anton Gerner Exhibition, at the National Trust mansion Labassa in Melbourne – a culmination of almost a decade’s work.
In that same year, he won the furniture section of the Victorian Craft Awards and was awarded the Jardan Furniture and Timber Award, which celebrates inspirational design and craftsmanship in timber.
In 2010 Anton Gerner received the Award for Best Production Piece in the Maximise competition and had his work highly commended at Studio Furniture 2010.
In 1992 an Anton Gerner jewelry box was acquired at the Alice Springs Alice Craft Acquisition Awards. In 1990, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 1998 Anton was awarded best cabinet work at the Victorian Woodworkers Association Annual Exhibition, taking out the prize for the best piece of the show in 1996. He also won first prize in Working With Wood Show’s contemporary furniture section (1992, 93, 94, 97).
In 1996 Anton Gerner was awarded the Natural Feature in Furniture Award, one of the most prestigious awards for furniture design in Australia.
